Twenty Candles

It was 2005 when I made a call that changed my career.
After years of struggling with the desire to launch a Canadian-based sponsorship conference without a clear concept, I finally had a breakthrough.
At the time, my motivation was simple. Although I loved attending numerous sponsorship conferences in other markets, particularly the IEG event in Chicago, the scale of the deals and budgets discussed in the case studies and presentations was far beyond our domestic scope. So, why not create a Canadian discussion and forum on the subject?
However, I knew that merely sitting in a hotel conference room, listening to presentation after presentation, wouldn’t be enough to attract delegates. Thus, I called Brent Scrimshaw, who ran Marketing for the Canadian Football League at the time, and asked a straightforward question: " Are you interested in having a marketing conference alongside the Grey Cup?” The answer was a resounding yes, and we launched our first forum in Vancouver that November. We were fully immersed in the festivities, including a private viewing of the Black Eyed Peas halftime show rehearsal the day before the big game, and we never looked back.
While 2025 marks our 20th anniversary, I don’t expect anyone to get nostalgic or send us bouquets. However, I hope you understand how grateful I am to everyone who has ever attended, spoken at, sponsored, or hosted our event. Thank you, twenty times over.
Like many brands, our anniversary has compelled us at SponsorshipX to reflect. Why do we exist? Who do we serve? What do we want to become? Throughout 2025, we intend to answer these questions repeatedly.
